Psalm 144

A King Thanks God for Victory

1 Praise theLord, my protector!

He trains me for battle

and prepares me for war.

2 He is my protector and defender,

my shelter and savior,

in whom I trust for safety.

He subdues the nations under me.

3 Lord, what are mortals, that you notice them;

mere mortals, that you pay attention to us?

4 We are like a puff of wind;

our days are like a passing shadow.

5 OLord, tear the sky open and come down;

touch the mountains, and they will pour out smoke.

6 Send flashes of lightning and scatter your enemies;

shoot your arrows and send them running.

7 Reach down from above,

pull me out of the deep water, and rescue me;

save me from the power of foreigners,

8 who never tell the truth

and lie even under oath.

9 I will sing you a new song, O God;

I will play the harp and sing to you.

10 You give victory to kings

and rescue your servant David.

11 Save me from my cruel enemies;

rescue me from the power of foreigners,

who never tell the truth

and lie even under oath.

12 May our sons in their youth

be like plants that grow up strong.

May our daughters be like stately columns

which adorn the corners of a palace.

13 May our barns be filled

with crops of every kind.

May the sheep in our fields

bear young by the tens of thousands.

14 May our cattle reproduce plentifully

without miscarriage or loss.

May there be no cries of distress in our streets.

15 Happy is the nation of whom this is true;

happy are the people whose God is theLord!

Psalm 145

A Hymn of Praise

1 I will proclaim your greatness, my God and king;

I will thank you forever and ever.

2 Every day I will thank you;

I will praise you forever and ever.

3 TheLordis great and is to be highly praised;

his greatness is beyond understanding.

4 What you have done will be praised from one generation to the next;

they will proclaim your mighty acts.

5 They will speak of your glory and majesty,

and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds.

6 People will speak of your mighty deeds,

and I will proclaim your greatness.

7 They will tell about all your goodness

and sing about your kindness.

8 TheLordis loving and merciful,

slow to become angry and full of constant love.

9 He is good to everyone

and has compassion on all he made.

10 All your creatures,Lord, will praise you,

and all your people will give you thanks.

11 They will speak of the glory of your royal power

and tell of your might,

12 so that everyone will know your mighty deeds

and the glorious majesty of your kingdom.

13 Your rule is eternal,

and you are king forever.

TheLordis faithful to his promises;

he is merciful in all his acts.

14 He helps those who are in trouble;

he lifts those who have fallen.

15 All living things look hopefully to you,

and you give them food when they need it.

16 You give them enough

and satisfy the needs of all.

17 TheLordis righteous in all he does,

merciful in all his acts.

18 He is near to those who call to him,

who call to him with sincerity.

19 He supplies the needs of those who honor him;

he hears their cries and saves them.

20 He protects everyone who loves him,

but he will destroy the wicked.

21 I will always praise theLord;

let all his creatures praise his holy name forever.

Psalm 146

In Praise of God the Savior

1 Praise theLord!

Praise theLord, my soul!

2 I will praise him as long as I live;

I will sing to my God all my life.

3 Don’t put your trust in human leaders;

no human being can save you.

4 When they die, they return to the dust;

on that day all their plans come to an end.

5 Happy are those who have the God of Jacob to help them

and who depend on theLordtheir God,

6 the Creator of heaven, earth, and sea,

and all that is in them.

He always keeps his promises;

7 he judges in favor of the oppressed

and gives food to the hungry.

TheLordsets prisoners free

8 and gives sight to the blind.

He lifts those who have fallen;

he loves his righteous people.

9 He protects the strangers who live in our land;

he helps widows and orphans,

but takes the wicked to their ruin.

10 TheLordis king forever.

Your God, O Zion, will reign for all time.

Praise theLord!

Psalm 147

In Praise of God the Almighty

1 Praise theLord!

It is good to sing praise to our God;

it is pleasant and right to praise him.

2 TheLordis restoring Jerusalem;

he is bringing back the exiles.

3 He heals the broken-hearted

and bandages their wounds.

4 He has decided the number of the stars

and calls each one by name.

5 Great and mighty is our Lord;

his wisdom cannot be measured.

6 He raises the humble,

but crushes the wicked to the ground.

7 Sing hymns of praise to theLord;

play music on the harp to our God.

8 He spreads clouds over the sky;

he provides rain for the earth

and makes grass grow on the hills.

9 He gives animals their food

and feeds the young ravens when they call.

10 His pleasure is not in strong horses,

nor his delight in brave soldiers;

11 but he takes pleasure in those who honor him,

in those who trust in his constant love.

12 Praise theLord, O Jerusalem!

Praise your God, O Zion!

13 He keeps your gates strong;

he blesses your people.

14 He keeps your borders safe

and satisfies you with the finest wheat.

15 He gives a command to the earth,

and what he says is quickly done.

16 He spreads snow like a blanket

and scatters frost like dust.

17 He sends hail like gravel;

no one can endure the cold he sends!

18 Then he gives a command, and the ice melts;

he sends the wind, and the water flows.

19 He gives his message to his people,

his instructions and laws to Israel.

20 He has not done this for other nations;

they do not know his laws.

Praise theLord!

A Call for the Universe to Praise God

1 Praise theLord!

Praise theLordfrom heaven,

you that live in the heights above.

2 Praise him, all his angels,

all his heavenly armies.

3 Praise him, sun and moon;

praise him, shining stars.

4 Praise him, highest heavens,

and the waters above the sky.

5 Let them all praise the name of theLord!

He commanded, and they were created;

6 by his command they were fixed in their places forever,

and they cannot disobey.

7 Praise theLordfrom the earth,

sea monsters and all ocean depths;

8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds,

strong winds that obey his command.

9 Praise him, hills and mountains,

fruit trees and forests;

10 all animals, tame and wild,

reptiles and birds.

11 Praise him, kings and all peoples,

princes and all other rulers;

12 young women and young men,

old people and children too.

13 Let them all praise the name of theLord!

His name is greater than all others;

his glory is above earth and heaven.

14 He made his nation strong,

so that all his people praise him—

the people of Israel, so dear to him.

Praise theLord!

Psalm 149

A Hymn of Praise

1 Praise theLord!

Sing a new song to theLord;

praise him in the assembly of his faithful people!

2 Be glad, Israel, because of your Creator;

rejoice, people of Zion, because of your king!

3 Praise his name with dancing;

play drums and harps in praise of him.

4 TheLordtakes pleasure in his people;

he honors the humble with victory.

5 Let God’s people rejoice in their triumph

and sing joyfully all night long.

6 Let them shout aloud as they praise God,

with their sharp swords in their hands

7 to defeat the nations

and to punish the peoples;

8 to bind their kings in chains,

their leaders in chains of iron;

9 to punish the nations as God has commanded.

This is the victory of God’s people.

Praise theLord!

Proverbs Introduction

Introduction

The book of

Proverbs

is a collection of moral and religious teachings in the form of sayings and proverbs. Much of it has to do with practical, everyday concerns. It begins with the reminder that “To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for the

Lord

,” and then goes on to deal with matters not only of religious morality, but also of common sense and good manners. Its many short sayings reveal the insights of ancient Israelite teachers about what a wise person will do in certain situations. Some of these concern family relations, others, business dealings. Some deal with matters of etiquette in social relationships, and others with the need of self-control. Much is said about such qualities as humility, patience, respect for the poor, and loyalty to friends.

Outline of Contents

In praise of wisdom (1.1—9.18)

Proverbs 1

The Value of Proverbs

1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David and king of Israel.

2 Here are proverbs that will help you recognize wisdom and good advice, and understand sayings with deep meaning.

3 They can teach you how to live intelligently and how to be honest, just, and fair.

4 They can make an inexperienced person clever and teach young people how to be resourceful.

5 These proverbs can even add to the knowledge of the wise and give guidance to the educated,

6 so that they can understand the hidden meanings of proverbs and the problems that the wise raise.

Advice to the Young

7 To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for theLord.Stupid people have no respect for wisdom and refuse to learn.

8 My child, pay attention to what your father and mother tell you.

9 Their teaching will improve your character as a handsome turban or a necklace improves your appearance.

10 My child, when sinners tempt you, don’t give in.

11 Suppose they say, “Come on; let’s find someone to kill! Let’s attack some innocent people for the fun of it!

12 They may be alive and well when we find them, but they’ll be dead when we’re through with them!

13 We’ll find all kinds of riches and fill our houses with loot!

14 Come and join us, and we’ll all share what we steal.”

15 My child, don’t go with people like that. Stay away from them.

16 They can’t wait to do something bad. They’re always ready to kill.

17 It does no good to spread a net when the bird you want to catch is watching,

18 but people like that are setting a trap for themselves, a trap in which they will die.

19 Robbery always claims the life of the robber—this is what happens toanyone who lives by violence.

Wisdom Calls

20 Listen! Wisdom is calling out in the streets and marketplaces,

21 calling loudly at the city gates and wherever people come together:

22 “Foolish people! How long do you want to be foolish? How long will you enjoy making fun of knowledge? Will you never learn?

23 Listen when I reprimand you; I will give you good advice and share my knowledge with you.

24 I have been calling you, inviting you to come, but you would not listen. You paid no attention to me.

25 You have ignored all my advice and have not been willing to let me correct you.

26 So when you get into trouble, I will laugh at you. I will make fun of you when terror strikes—

27 when it comes on you like a storm, bringing fierce winds of trouble, and you are in pain and misery.

28 Then you will call for wisdom, but I will not answer. You may look for me everywhere, but you will not find me.

29 You have never had any use for knowledge and have always refused to obey theLord.

30 You have never wanted my advice or paid any attention when I corrected you.

31 So then, you will get what you deserve, and your own actions will make you sick.

32 Inexperienced people die because they reject wisdom. Stupid people are destroyed by their own lack of concern.

33 But whoever listens to me will have security. He will be safe, with no reason to be afraid.”

Proverbs 2

The Rewards of Wisdom

1 My child, learn what I teach you and never forget what I tell you to do.

2 Listen to what is wise and try to understand it.

3 Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight.

4 Look for it as hard as you would for silver or some hidden treasure.

5 If you do, you will know what it means to fear theLordand you will succeed in learning about God.

6 It is theLordwho gives wisdom; from him come knowledge and understanding.

7 He provides help and protection for those who are righteous and honest.

8 He protects those who treat others fairly, and guards those who are devoted to him.

9 If you listen to me, you will know what is right, just, and fair. You will know what you should do.

10 You will become wise, and your knowledge will give you pleasure.

11 Your insight and understanding will protect you

12 and prevent you from doing the wrong thing. They will keep you away from people who stir up trouble by what they say—

13 those who have abandoned a righteous life to live in the darkness of sin,

14 those who find pleasure in doing wrong and who enjoy senseless evil,

15 unreliable people who cannot be trusted.

16 You will be able to resist any immoral woman who tries to seduce you with her smooth talk,

17 who is faithless to her own husband and forgets her sacred vows.

18 If you go to her house, you are traveling the road to death. To go there is to approach the world of the dead.

19 No one who visits her ever comes back. He never returns to the road to life.

20 So you must follow the example of good people and live a righteous life.

21 Righteous people—people of integrity—will live in this land of ours.

22 But God will snatch the wicked from the land and pull sinners out of it like plants from the ground.
